Conference History

Joint Conference

The two series of conferences have served as the stages for finding and exploring important novel concepts in physics and technologies such as superlattices, the Wigner lattice, the quantum Hall effects, quantum wires and dots, spintronics, the BECs of complex particles, graphene physics and devices, and topological phases.

The first “joining” of the two conferences occurred in 1985 for EP2DS-6 and MSS-2 in Kyoto, Japan. Tsuneya Ando (Chair of EP2DS) and Hiroyuki Sakaki (that of MSS) decided to hold the two conferences in parallel at the same location. The participants could freely come and go between the two. This form was reenacted in Nara, Japan, in 1991, again in Nara, 2003, and has been followed from then on.

The joint conference series is now established as a major event in the research fields of modulated semiconductors and low-dimensional electron systems.

EP2DS History

EP2DS (International Conference on Electronic Properties of Two-Dimensional Systems; it started as EP”Quasi-“2DS) made its successful start on 24-28 August, 1975 at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA. In the early time, the scopes are limited mainly to two dimensional systems, such as electrons at surfaces, interfaces, or layered materials. But with expansion of participants’ interest into yet lower dimensions, the conference now also covers zero and one dimensional systems.

 MSS History

MSS (International Conference on Modulated Semiconductor Structures) was started as “Metastable and Modulated Semiconductor Structures (MMSS)” on 6-10 December 1982, in Pasadena, California, USA. The conference received its present name in 1985 and since then, it has been regularly organized in every 2 years. The purpose of MSS is to provide an international forum on the latest progress in the field of physics, formation, processing, and device applications of modulated structures.
